The MRA8DE 1.8L uses a timing chain, not a belt — no scheduled replacement interval. However, chain tensioner and guide wear at high mileage (100,000+ km) can cause cold-start rattle. If you hear a brief rattle on cold start that disappears after warm-up, have the timing chain system inspected at your next service.
Sylphy Timing Chain
Sylphy uses a chain-driven valvetrain across all engine variants. The chain is rated to last the engine's life, but oil quality matters. Stick to 5W-30 or 0W-20 full synthetic with 10,000 km change intervals. A brief rattle on cold start that disappears after 3–5 seconds is usually the VTC actuator priming — normal. Sustained rattling after warm-up requires workshop inspection.
