YD25DDTi uses a timing chain — no belt replacement needed. However, chain stretch is a known issue at very high mileage (above 200,000 km) or with prolonged oil neglect. Symptoms: rattling on startup, timing codes. Regular diesel-spec oil changes are the best prevention. Once the chain stretches, ECM timing corrections can mask the problem until it's severe.
Navara YD25 Timing Chain
The YD25DDTi uses a timing chain that is generally robust with regular oil changes. However, using incorrect oil (non-DPF-rated high-SAPS oils) can cause premature chain wear over time. If you hear metallic rattling on cold start, have the chain and tensioner inspected. At 120,000 km+ it is worth a visual inspection of chain slack during a major service.
