GLC X253 (M274) and X254 (M254) both use modern all-metal timing chain designs. Timing chain issues are rare — significantly better than the older M271/M272. Prevention: correct MB spec oil changed at ASSYST-recommended intervals, never let oil drop below minimum.

The M271 1.8T (W204 C200/C250) has a known timing chain stretch problem — this is the single most critical maintenance concern for used W204 owners in Malaysia. Symptoms: cold-start rattle that disappears after 30 seconds (chain stretch), P0016/P0017 fault codes. Fix: full timing chain kit replacement (RM 2,500–4,500). Later engines (M270, M274, M177) have improved timing chains — but still require proper MB 229.51 oil and 10,000 km changes. Early chain failure is almost always linked to extended oil change intervals or wrong oil specification.
