Mazda CX-90 O2 Sensor Malaysia
CX-90 3.3T PHEV: upstream and downstream lambda sensors. PHEV operation complicates O2 sensor function — when engine is cold-started after EV mode, sensor warm-up takes longer, potentially causing transient lean/rich codes. P0420 (catalyst) monitoring: important for turbocharged inline-6 — high exhaust temperatures from turbo stress the catalytic converter. O2 sensor replacement: inline-6 means 2+ sensors, access varies — some may require lift for underbody access.

The oxygen sensor (O2 sensor or lambda sensor) monitors the oxygen content of exhaust gases and sends this data to the ECU, which adjusts the fuel-air mixture in real time. A failing O2 sensor is one of the most common causes of increased fuel consumption in Malaysia — sometimes 15–20% more fuel used without the driver noticing.
Symptoms of a failing O2 sensor
- Noticeably higher fuel consumption — same route, same driving but using more petrol
- Rough idle or hunting — ECU receiving bad data and over/under-fuelling
- Check engine light — typically P0130–P0167 codes (upstream/downstream sensor faults)
- Failed emissions test — rich or lean mixture causes high CO or HC readings
- Exhaust smelling rich (fuel odour) or sharp (lean condition)
Replacement cost and what to expect
O2 sensor replacement at 4M Car Care: RM 180–450 per sensor (parts + labour) for most cars. European cars with multiple sensors (some have 4) cost more. We scan the fault codes first to identify exactly which sensor is faulty before ordering parts.
Always use OEM or quality brand sensors (Bosch, Denso, NTK). Cheap sensors often give incorrect readings or fail within months in Malaysia's heat — causing the same problem to return.
