CX-90 3.3T head gasket failure risk is low under normal maintenance. Turbocharged inline-6: sustained overheating (from coolant leak or failed thermostat) is the primary risk. PHEV frequent cold starts: ensure coolant is always at correct level — system leak can cause rapid overheat if not detected. Inline-6 has two cylinder head gaskets (6-cylinder engine) — repair is more involved than 4-cylinder. Prevent: maintain coolant level and change FL22 on schedule.
The head gasket seals the joint between the engine block and cylinder head, keeping combustion gases, oil, and coolant in their separate passages. A blown head gasket is one of the most serious engine failures — and one of the most expensive to repair. In Malaysia's climate, overheating events are the most common cause.
Warning signs — catch it early
- White smoke from the exhaust (sweet-smelling — coolant burning in the combustion chamber)
- Milky, frothy oil on the dipstick or underside of the oil cap
- Coolant level dropping repeatedly with no visible external leak
- Engine overheating, especially in KL traffic — temperature gauge in red zone
- Bubbles in the coolant reservoir when engine is running (combustion gases entering cooling system)
Repair cost — and why you should not delay
