The Q5 8R 2.0 TFSI (2008–2017) carries the same EA888 Gen 2 timing chain risk as the A4 B8 — particularly pre-2012 units. Cold morning rattle is the early warning. Haldex Gen 4 quattro coupling fluid is the #1 neglected service on Q5 — skipping it leads to rear coupling overheating and eventual failure (RM 5,000–8,000 replacement). These two items together define the Q5 8R ownership risk profile.
Q5 FY (2017+) — More Reliable
FY Q5 uses EA888 Gen 3 with DQ381 wet-clutch + Torsen quattro (no Haldex). Main watchpoints: HPFP + cam follower (same as A4 B9), carbon at 60,000–80,000 km, DQ381 fluid every 40,000 km. Torsen rear diff: SAF-XO every 60,000 km — often missed.
