Audi A4 B9 Common Problems Malaysia — EA888 & DQ381
A4 B9 is more reliable than older B8. Main concerns: EA888 HPFP failure, carbon buildup at 60,000 km, DQ381 S-tronic mechatronic at high mileage, and coolant system.

HPFP Failure (EA888)
The EA888 high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) is a known weak point on A4 B9. Symptoms: rough idle, hard starting, engine stutter at low RPM, fault code P0087 (fuel pressure too low). Causes: HPFP wear, cam follower (tappet) wear on the camshaft lobe that drives the pump. Always inspect the cam follower before replacing the HPFP — if the follower is destroyed, the camshaft lobe may also be damaged. Cost: HPFP RM 1,500–2,500; cam follower RM 200–350.
Carbon Buildup & S-tronic Service
Same as A3: direct injection EA888 means carbon builds on intake valves at 60,000–80,000 km. In addition, the DQ381 S-tronic fluid should be changed every 40,000 km — even though Audi calls it lifetime. Dark, degraded ATF leads to rough shifts and early mechatronic wear. Combine carbon cleaning and DSG fluid service at the 60,000 km mark for best value.
