When to change tyres? Tread and age both matter
Tyres are the only part touching the road — vital for safety. Here's how to judge by tread, age and condition.

Many think tyres "can be used until they burst," but tyres age and tread wears flat, hurting grip and water dispersal. These standards help you judge.
1. Tread depth
When the tread wears to about 1.6mm (the TWI wear marker on the tyre), it's time to change. Grip and water dispersal drop in the rain and it can slip.
2. Age
Even with enough tread, rubber hardens and ages over time. Generally replace every 5–6 years; check the four-digit code on the sidewall (week/year of manufacture).
3. Looks & abnormalities
Sidewall bulges, cracks, nails, or uneven wear (possibly an alignment issue) should all be checked promptly.
Tip
After changing tyres, do an alignment and balancing for a steadier ride and longer tyre life.
