How often to change engine oil? Malaysia climate tips
Heat and traffic make Malaysia tough on oil. Here's how often different oils should be changed, and how to tell.

Engine oil is key to lubrication and cooling. Change it too late and engine wear speeds up, fuel use rises, and over time it can shorten engine life. How often, though, depends on the oil you use and your driving environment.
Change interval by oil type
Mineral: about every 5,000 km or 3 months.
Semi-synthetic: about every 7,000–8,000 km.
Fully synthetic: about every 10,000 km or 6 months.
These are general guides. Malaysia's heat and stop-go city traffic load the engine more than standard conditions, so lean towards the shorter interval.
How to tell the oil needs changing
Mileage or time is up (whichever comes first).
Pull the dipstick — the oil looks dark and thick.
Engine noisier, rough idle.
Abnormally high fuel use or temperature.
Tip
When changing oil, also check the oil and air filters and change them together if needed — works better. Short-commute drivers especially should change by time, not just mileage.
Is fully synthetic always better?
Fully synthetic protects better and lasts longer, especially in Malaysia's heat and on turbo engines. But the most important thing is matching your car's required spec — for an older, simple engine, a good semi-synthetic can be enough. Choose by your car and the spec, not just the highest price.
Don't just watch mileage — watch time too
Oil degrades even when you barely drive — short trips, idling and heat all break it down. If you've done low mileage but it's been over 6 months, still change it. Not sure which oil suits your car? Come to 4M CARCARE — we'll check and help you pick the right spec, and quote before any work.
