Signs of a failing alternator (not just the battery)
New battery but the car still won't start? It could be the alternator. Dim lights, a warning light, belt noise — here's how to tell the battery from the alternator.

The alternator charges your battery and powers the car's electrics while the engine runs. When it starts to fail, people often blame the battery — replace the battery, and the car dies again days later. Here's how to spot a failing alternator and tell it apart from a weak battery.
Warning signs
The battery or charging warning light on the dashboard comes on.
Headlights and interior lights dim, especially at idle or with the air-cond on.
A whining or growling noise, or a squealing belt from the engine.
Electrical glitches — flickering meters, weak power windows, or the car stalling.
A brand-new battery still goes flat — a classic sign the alternator isn't charging.
Battery or alternator?
A simple test tells them apart: we measure the charging voltage with the engine running. A healthy alternator puts out around 13.8–14.4 volts. If it's low, the alternator (or its regulator/belt) is the problem, not the battery.
